Merry Christmas from New Life!  Isaiah prophesied "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel" (7:11).  Matthew points to Jesus as the fulfillment of this prophesy in Matthew 1:23.  This Christmas, let's remember that one of the greatest joys of being a Christian is that "in Christ", God is truly "with us" no matter the trouble, the trial, or the temptation.    Whatever you are facing this Christmas, God is with you!

We are looking forward to celebrating the birth of God's Son, Jesus into the world.  Join us Sunday, December 23rd at the ARC @ 10:15 for a special New Life Kidz presentation and join us at the Christmas Eve candlelight celebration on December 24th (7-8 PM) at the Holiday Inn Executive Center.  See you there.  Pastor Tom

Christmas is here!

At New Life, we are looking forward to celebrating Jesus, the light of the world.  Beginning this Sunday, December 2nd we will enjoy the advent readings celebrating the birth of Jesus.  Each Sunday we will celebrate Christmas by focusing on the Christmas story in the gospels.  This is a great time of year to invite a friend and rediscover the true reason for the season.  In addition to our Sunday gatherings, we have a number of special events scheduled in December.  You're invited, so make plans to attend.

  • Young Adult Christmas Party - Friday, December 7th
  • Thrive Christmas Party - Saturday, December 15th
  • New Life Kid's Christmas Presentation - Sunday, December 23rd
  • Christmas Eve Candle Light Service - Monday, December 24th

We have chosen Matthew 5:14, 16 as our life verse this month.  It reads, "You are the light of the world. . . . In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Samaritan Purse effort to provide Christmas shoe boxes to needy kids around the world.  What a great way to serve!

In this busy season, take time to worship, to serve, and to point others to the true light of Jesus Christ.  I look forward to seeing you Sunday.  Pastor Tom

Can't wait for Sunday and hope you will join us!  We have been preparing for a very special Sunday, November 18th.  We are inviting back every person or family who has attended New Life in the past.  We are encouraging New Lifers to invite friends and family to be present with us in worship.  Plus, we have planned a special thanksgiving reception immediately following the Sunday morning gathering.

Join us this Sunday as we focus on the biblical metaphor of the harvest, give thanks and rejoice.  See you at the ARC at 10:15 AM.

Love the new set-up!

This week we will focus on what it means to "LOVE LIKE JESUS"!  If you have not joined us in a few weeks, please make plans to attend this Sunday for great fellowship, worship, and spiritual growth. Pastor Tom will lead us through the story of the Good Samaritan.  New Life is truly a blessed church and you are one of the reasons it is such a fun place to be on Sunday mornings.  Join us with the whole family!

See you Sunday at the ARC (10:15 AM).

Think Like Jesus

Last week we focused on the Lord's Prayer (in Luke 11) as we were reminded of the importance prayer in our journey of becoming like Jesus.  This week we are focusing on what it means to "think like Jesus".  I have a confession.  So far this series is challenging me to see how much I am not like Jesus.  But, I am also encouraged to keep becoming more like Him!

Yesterday, I read through the gospel of Luke and encountered all the hard sayings of Jesus, especially in Luke 6 (it's worth reading). In Luke 6, we are encouraged to love our enemies, avoid a "judgmental" attitude, and build our lives on the foundation of obedience -- all three are very hard to do.  In fact, outside of Christ and without God's help, I would say each of these behaviors are impossible to live out.    But the Apostle Paul encourages us with the words, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13)

So what does it mean to "think like Jesus"?  The gospel promises to renew us, if we turn to Jesus and follow Him.  A primary aspect of spiritual renewal is mental renewal.  Paul wrote to the Romans , "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."  (Romans 12:2)  As we are transformed by the gospel and the presence of Jesus in our lives, we will experience a renewal in our mind and increasingly think like Jesus.  To live like Jesus is to think like Jesus.

Join us Sunday at the ARC (10:15 AM) as we explore this important topic.   Bring a friend!

Praying like Jesus

Abraham, friend of God, was a man of prayer.  Moses, as well, talked with God, as one speaks with a friend.  Elijah, the praying prophet, called fire down from heaven.  Daniel prayed and was thrown into the lion's den.  Daniel prayed again and was restored to great position.  Learning to pray; to talk with God and listen to his voice is the great adventure of your spiritual journey.

Learning to pray is more important than secular success or earthly happiness and it is the key to unlocking and living in God's will for your life.  The first step to learning how to pray is admitting that we don't pray or don't know how to pray as we should.  The second step is similar -- learning to listen.  Listening requires quietness of spirit and humility of heart.  Prayer produces a fruitful relationship with God and A+ living (John 10:10; John 15:1-5).

Join us Sunday as we focus on our need to learn how to pray like Jesus!  See you Sunday at the ARC! Pastor Tom

OOPS!  I guess I got excited about the HARVEST Series coming up in November and forgot about October.  Sunday, October 6th, we are kicking off a series entitled "Live Like Jesus".  I think you are going to love it!  As followers of Christ, we know that Jesus was an amazing leader, teacher, and savior, but can we live like Him?  I won't be suggesting that we sell our cars and wander the streets, but I will be asking the question, "What does it mean to live like Jesus today?"  Hope you will join us in October as we become more like Jesus!  Bring a friend.  See you Sunday.  Pastor Tom

Looking forward to a new series called, "THE HARVEST".  Most people don't think of life as a harvest (unless your a farmer), but Jesus did.  As we move into a season of thanksgiving, at New Life we want to focus on what Jesus and the Bible has to say about harvest.  I hope you will be present for the next 3-4 Sundays as we begin to think about life as a harvest!

New Creation

This Sunday, we wrap up our series on Grace in Galatians!  Through out the letter to the Galatians, Paul has focused on the grace of God available to us in Christ Jesus.  He highlights our new position in Christ, our new freedom, and the potential of living by the Spirit and producing good fruit.  Then he wraps up with a clear focus on the cross of Christ and the importance of becoming a new creation!

The cross of Christ is central to Christianity.  In fact, without the cross, you really don't have Christianity!  The cross of Christ reminds me of the price that Jesus paid for my spiritual freedom and the sacrifices I must make in order to walk with Him.  Join us Sunday as we wrap up our focus on grace and the cross of Jesus!  See you Sunday!

A Theology of Grace

Grace may be the most important concept in the Bible!  What do you think?  I would love to hear from you about your favorite theology in the Bible.  Paul certainly felt that grace was central to the Christian message.  For instance, nearly two-thirds (100 out of 154) of the NT occurrences of charis, normally translated "grace," are found in the Pauline letters.  Paul is concerned with God's grace (i.e. love), the grace of salvation (i.e. unmerited favor), and gifts of grace (i.e. endowments for service).

In Galatians, Paul is especially concerned with God's grace in comparison to human effort or "law observance".  His message throughout the book of Galatians is that human effort is a by-product of God's favor rather than a precursor.  Only by connecting with God's grace in Christ Jesus can we experience the Christian Life and expect a change of heart and mind.  God's grace sets us free and lifts us up to live a better life!

Join us this Sunday at New Life as we continue to focus on God's grace in Galatians.  Paul wrote in 5:1, "It is for freedom that Christ set you free."      See you at the ARC.  Pastor Tom

Nostalgia and lessons learned

The following blog may read a little different, because it is also written for a blog on the Missourian web page.  Hope you enjoy it.

Every once in a while I get nostalgic.  The dictionary defines, nostalgia as "a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past".  Truth is, I'm usually too busy striving to build the future to have time to get sentimental over the past.  One of my favorite quotes is "The best way to predict the future is to invent it."  A current scripture which gives me strength comes from Psalm 27:13. It reads, "I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord."  This verse is a reminder to me that what God promises, he fulfills.

This past year, our oldest son, Luke, graduated from Hickman.  Luke recently left home for college all grown up and ready to face the world.  We are very proud of him!  But we also felt the "emotional shift" of his empty seat at the dinner table!  Nostalgia is more than sentimentality.  It can also be beneficial because it reminds us of valuable lessons from the past.  Luke was just thirteen when we began the exciting adventure of beginning a new church in Columbia.

I want to take a minute to reminisce about some of the lessons learned from the past few years in raising a child and also building a church.  I hope you find some of the "lessons learned" helpful.

In 2006, Jeni and I decided to invent the future (with God's help, of course).  We moved back to Columbia from across the ocean with the dream of starting a new church.  It was slow going and pretty lonely at first.  Some people we met would say things like, "Aren't there enough churches in Columbia?" Others were encouraging and liked the idea, but certainly weren't willing to join in the fun.  For many, it sounded like too much work!   It didn't seem to matter to them that only 3 out of 10 people in Columbia even attended a church -- But it mattered to us! And it mattered that many people were looking for the good life, but were living out something much less!  We knew far too many people who were living broken lives with no hope of any change in sight.

In 2007, when we started the first Sunday morning Bible study in our home we knew of only one couple who was committed to help build the dream of "Enriching Our Community One Life at a time" by connecting people with Jesus.  We knew starting a new church from scratch could be tough.  We dreamed about becoming a church serving families and mending broken lives.  And yet, we didn't have a core group of people or ministry leaders ready to serve children, students, or families.  Not to mention, we lacked other resources like a building, a worship team, and a budget.  But just like the little train, "Thomas the tank engine" who said, "I think I can", we believed in our dream and gradually we saw God bring people around us who also believed in the dream.  I loved those early months when we were just getting started because people didn't expect much and they only came for one reason -- the dream.  We had nothing else to offer, no services, no great worship gatherings, no conferences, and no facilities.

In September of 2007, we began meeting publicly at the ARC (Columbia's Activity and Recreation Center).  We were only a handful of people with little more than a hope and a prayer and most people in Columbia didn't even know we existed.  Although the growth was slow and the stories of lives touched or transformed were only a few, something was happening -- a new church was being formed and beginning to grow!  As growth came so did problems.  Building up a new church can be a messy process, much like raising a child.  Some days you take two steps forward, only to take a step backward the following day.  Not everyone accepts the difference between current reality and future destination.  And not everyone is willing to move past being a consumer in order to become a builder.  Many are quick to point fingers and say "This is not the dream you promised".  But others hold on to the dream and keep moving forward.

I remember so many "firsts" -- there was our first ever I Love America Festival, the first ever Christmas Eve Candlelight Service, our fist choir, our first couples conference, and our first leadership retreat.  All of these events represented growth in the church, but also in individual lives.  As I look back over the past five years of parenting and pastoring, there have been a number of emotional ups and downs, but here's some of the lessons which I have learned along the way . . .

Make your vision clear . . . You will never reach your dream by changing the dream for others.  So make your vision clear and hold on to the dream!  Being intentional about your dream works in raising kids as well.  I still remember  the day our oldest son was born.  I remember our hopes and aspirations for him.  Over the years, those hopes never really changed.  What did change is the need to share our dreams with Luke so that our dreams became his dreams.  Never underestimate the power of influencing someone else's dream with your dream.

Identify your values . . . People know you by your values.  We all have values!  Your values are like an unspoken nickname.  It is important to identify them and then be intentional about promoting them.  This is especially true as a church, organization, or child grows up.   Not everyone will share your values.  Your child may even question your values, but if you identify your values and promote them, you can develop a unique and memorable brand as a person, a parent, a church, or an organization.  At New Life Community Church our greatest value is spiritual growth and life-change.  Promoting this value helps us attract people who want to experience personal growth as they follow Jesus.

Be patient and persevere . . .  Someone once said to me, "Tom, if you want to be successful, you have to be patient, but not too patient".  Good things take time to grow.  Raising a child to be solid, successful, and significant takes patience, but also perseverance.  So does beginning a business, launching a new career, or  . . . starting a new church.  Things don't always go as planned, timetables sometimes get turned over.  It's easy to give up or loose hope, but those who hold on to the dream and persevere reap the rewards.

And that is the greatest lesson of starting New Life and raising a child -- the rewards are great.  Yes, there have been challenges, setbacks, sweat, tears, and much prayer, but the joy of seeing the dream grow far outweighs any suffering along the way.

As I look back on the last five years of church growth and the last five years of my son's life, I know that the next five years will be even better as I (along with others) work to build the dream.  I hope you caught that -- We are no longer alone!  Others, many others are now dreaming the dream of New Life.  The dream can only grow!  We are stronger now than ever before!  I hope you will join me in building the dream of Ne wLife!  Together we can proclaim Psalm 27:13, "Psalm 27:13. It reads, "I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord."

Grace in Galatians

Really exciting about this Sunday's gathering as we begin a new series on "grace".  I have been preaching a number of years now and never have I preached a series exclusively on God's grace.  I believe this series and the biblical concept of grace can be life-changing for you in your walk with God, so I hope you will join us over the next few weeks.  The New Testament word for grace appears 100 times in the NIV.  Without a clear understanding of grace, we can't understand the Christian gospel.   My hope is that we will gain a greater appreciation for God's grace and apply His grace to our lives more readily!   Please spread the word and invite friends and family!  See you Sunday!  Pastor Tom

Saturday, August 11, 2012

This week we wrap up a series on the Armor of God.  Ephesians 6:11 says, "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes."  It is our hope that this series is helping you stand strong for your faith and fight for God's plan for your life!

Over the last few weeks we have been focusing on the spiritual battle which rages in our world and each of our lives.  This Sunday, August 12th, we take a look at the power of prayer as a tool in our battle against the enemy.  I hope you are a person of prayer and willing to grow in your prayer life.  Through prayer, we can stay connected with our power source and effectively defeat the enemy of God's plans and purposes for our lives.

One more thing -- Good news!  This Sunday our core group is meeting to form up membership.  What a great step for New Life.  20-30 believers have the privilege of becoming founding members of New Life Community Church.  What a thrill!  The best is definitely yet to come!  This is just the beginning!

See you Sunday!  Pastor Tom

Looking forward to this year's Parenting Conference.  Parenting is very important to us at New Life.  We want to help you raise kids who love God, live with integrity, and enjoy the success which God has planned for their lives.  Last year we focused on the "Building Blocks to a Healthy Home".  This year we are planning on utilizing materials from Family Matters entitled, "Raising Truly Great Kids".  The dates are set for Friday, September 7th and Saturday morning, September 8th.  Don't worry the MU football game doesn't even start until 6 PM.  Make plans now to join us for this important conference.  Single moms, grandparents, step-parents, and parents of all ages will take away valuable insights to apply in their homes.  Stay tuned for more info!

Friday, July 13, 2012

Looking forward to the upcoming sermon series entitled "Armor of God".  The Christian life is a supernatural life.  We can't live it without the Spirit's strength.  Nor can we afford to ignore the existence of real spiritual forces working against us.  Paul encourages us to "Be strong in the Lord!"  We do this by putting on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:11).  Join us over the next few weeks as we take a look at the Christian life from the perspective of a Roman soldier in full armor.  See you at the ARC on Sundays at 10:15 AM.  Pastor Tom

What a great Father's Day!  Every home needs a strong father.  If you haven't seen the movie Courageous, it is really a must see movie.  What a great job the produces have done in creating a story which touching on so many important issues for men, fathers, and families.

Next week (the week of June 24th) we are looking forward to launching small group Bible Studies using the Courageous Living DVD and discussion material.  If you are interested, please get signed up by calling 573-443-LIFE or e-mailing tom@newlifecolumbia.org.

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

You're invited to the Church in Prayer prayer meeting beginning this Wednesday evening at 6:30 PM (at the church office).

We will pray for about an hour.  Please join us as we seek God for our families, church, and community.  We have many things about which to pray.

Recently, I had a great time away with Luke on his graduation trip to the Boundary Waters.  Especially notable about the trip was the solitude, simplicity, and struggle of the trip.  I already miss it.  Life in Columbia is hectic and it can be difficult to focus on the really important things in life.  Prayer is an opportunity to re-focus your life on God and His plans for your life.  I hope you will join us for prayer.  The Psalmist wrote, "Be still, and know that I am God . . ." (46:10).
I LOVE AMERICA posters are available.  You can pick some up at the church office or at the ARC on Sunday mornings.  Help us spread the word about a great community event in mid-missouri.  Call 443-5433 if you want some posters.

Jim Coy on Family Life

Hey New Lifers!  If you missed Col. Jim Coy on Family life this morning on BOTT Radio (89.9), here is a permanent link to the program (http://www.familylife.com/audio/topics/faith/essentials/growing-in-your-faith/20120528-a-gathering-of-eagles).  Take a listen, you will be glad you did.  Thanks to all our heroes who have served (including Col. Jim Coy)!  Happy Memorial Day.

Boundary Waters adventure

Great to be back from the Boundary Waters in Ely, Minnesota.  We were in for 3 nights and 4 days, caught lots of fish and had a great time as Father and Son.  Really, it was a survival trip as the weather was uncooperative.  Wind and rain were our constant companions.  We caught northern pike, walleye, small mouth and one large mouth bass.  Luke caught one northern pike that measured 31".  If you ever get the chance to go to the Boundary Waters, you should.  Take rain gear.  High temperature was mid 50s and lows were in the 40s.

the Spirit-filled Life

This Sunday we will focus on the "Spirit-filled" life from Paul's letter to the Roman believers in Romans 8.  I hope you will join us at New Life as we celebrate Mother's day and reach out to connect with God in Christ.

In Romans 8, Paul continues to describe the Christian life as the "Spirit-filled life".  Many of you are probably asking, "How is it possible to live a "Spirit-filled" life?"  Join us Sunday as the Apostle Paul suggests that the Christian life really can be a super-natural life after all.  Don't forget to bring mom and the whole family.

Power of the Resurrection

This Sunday, we are kicking off our series, "He is Risen".  I hope you will join us.  The series will lead us through the book of Romans and remind us of the gospel story and the power of a life-changing relationship with God.

This Sunday we will focus on Romans 1:16-17.  Paul wrote to the Roman believers only 27-30 years after Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead.  As Paul begins his letter to the Roman believers, he is focused on the power of Christ' resurrection.  Come experience a resurrection in your walk with God.

He is Risen!

Easter celebration is early this year.  So on Sunday, April 8th we are kicking off a new series entitled, "He is Risen" and planning an Easter Egg Hunt and a water baptism.  It focuses on the life-changing power of the gospel which Paul writes about in the book of Romans.  Make plans now to celebrate with us on Easter Sunday and throughout the month of April.

Ready, Set, Grow - Belong!

What a great start to our March series on spiritual growth.  This past Sunday, we focused on the New Life core value of BEGIN - exploring and embracing biblical truth.  We took a look at the story of Nicodemus and Jesus and what it means to experience spiritual rebirth.  This next Sunday, we will continue to press forward in our quest for spiritual growth in Christ Jesus.  A second core value at New Life represents another spiritual milestone in our journey.  We call it BELONG by enjoying Christian community.  Many believers today underestimate the power of "belonging".  Join us Sunday as we consider the importance of building solid relationships in the church and growing spiritually as we do.  See you Sunday.  Pastor Tom

Ready, Set, Grow!

This Sunday, we kick off our March spiritual growth / vision series, entitled "Ready, Set, Grow!"  I hope you will join in each Sunday as we ask God to help us grow and make spiritual commitments which allow God's Spirit to be at work in our lives.   This Sunday, we will get started with the first core value of New Life - BEGIN.  We believe that every New Lifer should begin a spiritual journey of faith in Christ Jesus by exploring and embracing biblical truth.

One of the foundational questions we will be asking on Sunday is "Why is growing spiritually important?" Most of us have more important things going on, right?!  We are striving to make our marriage work, become the best parent possible, and make the money necessary to be comfortable and provide for our needs and wants.

Here's the reason spiritual growth is so important: all of those pursuits are fruitless without God.  Your spiritual growth is essential to accomplishing many of the great goals in life.  Few people connect the dots, but if you want a truly great romance and marriage, you need to grow up spiritually.  If you want to become the best parent possible for your kids, you need God's help!   If you want to make a lot of money and not end up miserable, you need to grow up spiritually!

The Bible says, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." (James 1:17)   I believe God has good things in store for your life, but the key to experiencing God's good gifts is to allow God to produce in you a transformed life -- a life transformed to be more like Jesus.

Ready, Set, Grow!

Walking with God - Moses

Really enjoyed the message on Joseph and hope you did as well.  One of the themes that is becoming a pattern in many of the great people of faith in the Old Testament is that the story is really more about God's activity than anything spectacular about the individual.  Moses is another case in point.  Clearly, he became a giant of a man and a great leader.  But when God called him, he was full of doubts and excuses, not faith and action.  It gives me great hope to realize that becoming what God wants me to be is a process of spiritual growth and I don't need to loose heart just because I am less than perfect.  Join us Sunday as we continue our series, "Walking with God" and look at the life of Moses.

Jacob's journey home

Looking forward to this Sunday's message on "Jacob's Journey Home".  Jacob's story occupies 10 chapters  in the book of Genesis.  Jacob was many things - a tent dweller, a shepherd, a deceiver, and a fighter.  In fact, Jacob wrestled with just about everyone who came his way.  His story is full of deceit, violence, and suspense.   What is most notable about JAcob's story is that Jacob wrestled with God and "prevailed"!  Imagine that!  God rewarded JAcob for wrestling with God.

The story of Jacob can teach us many things about walking with God, prayer, and prevailing with the promises of God.  I hope you'll join us Sunday and bring a friend.

Mentoring at New Life

At this year's leadership retreat we spoke about mentoring - something that is very important to the culture of New Life.  New Life needs people who can help others grow as they grow.  There are two specific areas which require mentoring -- personal spiritual growth and leadership or ministry development.  Let's take a look at the second area first.

Mentoring in ministry or "on the job training" is an important part of New Life culture.  We encourage every New Life servant-leader to develop others in their area of ministry.  This requires a number of important skills.  Leaders must be willing to 1) step back to create a void or need, 2) recruit others by making them feel welcomed and valued, and 3) be willing to take the time to show others how to perform specific ministry tasks and help them until they get it right.  Including others in the ministries of New Life is the responsibility of every leader.  We should not rest until every newcomer has an opportunity to serve.

A second area in which mentoring is very important is personal spiritual growth.  Mentoring for spiritual growth is an important part of our core values at New Life.  We believe spiritual growth happens as you BELONG, that is connect with Christ Jesus and other believers.  The Bible says, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17)  Because of American culture, many of us hide from real spiritual relationships with others, but God calls us to walk with Him and  connect with other believers at New Life.

Mentoring for spiritual growth can be organic and unstructured.  Sometimes it just naturally happens as people connect, form friendships, and share their struggles, successes, and search for significance.  At New Life we encourage you to form meaningful relationships and help each other grow.  In addition, however, we value the structure of small group ministry as an excellent way to encourage relationships and spiritual growth.  And my prayer is that many New Lifers will become excellent small group leaders in the months and years ahead.

Mentoring for ministry is what I call level-1 mentoring.  Mentoring for spiritual growth is "Next Level Mentoring".  Here are some practical tips for mentoring at either level.

1. Ask God for a BIG heart for people.  Let's think of BIG as an acronym.

B= Blessing. People need you to bless them with words of encourage and acceptance.  People are often drowning in negativity.  God's heart blesses people.  So don't be the "nay sayer", be an encourager.

I = Influence.  At New Life we utilize something called the "leadership ladder".  It begins with "attracting others" and climbs to "reproducing others".  Mentoring is really all about influence.  But to influence someone towards spiritual growth in Christ Jesus, you first have to attract them to you and to Christ.  This is actually the work of the Holy Spirit in your life as a mentor / leader, but you need to be aware of the importance of attraction.  As you attract others, you have the opportunity to influence their spiritual journey.  A mentor focuses on helping a person develop a close relationship with the Lord so that their life produces spiritual fruit--that's spiritual reproduction.

G = Grace.  Grace is essential to living with God's heart.  The Bible says, "For by grace are you saved through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift of god, not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)  God loves us and offers us His unconditional love--that's grace.  We don't deserve it and can't earn it.  As a mentor of others, we need to operate with God's heart of grace.  Only God's grace can redeem us or empower us to grow spiritually.  Focusing on God's grace will remind us to be patient when people aren't growing according to our time tables.  Only by God's grace will they grow, not by our efforts.

2. Make time for people at New Life and in your circle of influence.  I recently heard a message in which the pastor spoke about busyness being the #1 sin of Americans.  We are often so busy we don't have time for the truly important things in life.  Building relationships take time, patience, and intentionality.  If you want to be a spiritual leader at New Life, you must take time for people.  We are all busy, but the truly important thing in life require that we set aside time for relationships.  Because relationships take time, we should focus only on a few.  Jesus only chose 12 and we certainly should try to do more than Jesus.  Focus on a few and build meaningful relationships with them.

3.  Consistently direct people towards a closer walk with Jesus Christ.  They say that a person's life is made up of very few themes.  If you want to be a mentor / leader at New Life, one of the major themes of your life must be a love for God and a desire to point others towards Christ.  You do this by pointing people to a deeper devotional life of prayer and Bible study.  After all, spiritual growth is the work of the Holy Spirit in a person's life, not our work.  The work and gifting of a small group leader is to work with God's Spirit.  A small group leader consistently and patiently points others towards a relationship with Christ as the answer to all of life's problems and the key to a truly great life.

Three things you can do to mentor others at New Life.  It works when mentoring for ministry and it works when you are mentoring others for spiritual growth.
